60% of Young Marriages End In Divorce
So the news is out. Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth are engaged. It was announced today that a 3.5-carat diamond ring was given to Cyrus from her Australian beau on May 31st. The news is bringing lots of attention to the statistics on young marriages.
Miley Cyrus is 19 while Liam Hemsworth is 22. The two met on the set of the romance movie “The Last Song” in which they were the love interest in the story. They have been dating on and off now for three years.
Growing up in the limelight perhaps has brought Cyrus more maturity than her young age shows. She landed the role of “Hannah Montana” at the age of 12 and has been growing in popularity ever since. Not only this, she is the daughter of country music star Billy Ray Cyrus.
However, the questions about marrying so young remain. Nearly 50% of marriages end in divorce and this number increases as age decreases. Between the ages of 20-25, 60% of all marriage end in divorce according to the National Center for Health Statistics.
Reasons for young marriages ending early include emotional immaturity, young people’s brains and endorphins.
Emotional immaturity combines life experience with not really knowing who you are as an individual yet. Peg Donley, a licensed marital therapist in Prairie Village, Kan said “Younger people are more apt to go into marriage with the expectation that the other person is going to fulfill them. Older people are probably a little more seasoned, more realistic.”
Young marriages often fail because of endorphins. Although the young couple is completely in love and romantic all the time in the initial stages and believe they will be like this forever, the endorphins that make them feel this way only last for 3 years in a marriage. When these feelings change, young marriages often fail.
Finally, women’s brains are not fully developed until they are 25 years old. Men’s brains are not developed until they are somewhere between 25 and 30. Marrying before the brain is fully developed can bring many more issues!
Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth are in a challenging spot to begin with as many actors and actresses marriages fall through. So, adding their youth to this seems to give them a tough hand. However, maybe love will prevail and they will be one of the young marriages that last.
