After Two Gold Olympic Medals, Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Are Heading To London Looking For Number 3.
The Olympics first awarded medals for beach volleyball at the 1996 Atlanta Games and the sport has definitely been growing. London’s Summer Games reports it as one of the most sought-after ticket sellers with some of the medal match ticket prices going for as much as 450 pounds, or $715.
Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh have many medals under their bikinis, including world titles for 2003, 2005 and 2007. Their record at world championships is very impressive at 32-1. Plus, the Olympic realm has also brought them gold medals in 2 games, the last being Beijing in 2008.
Despite not playing together in 2009 and 2010, they feel they are going to be ready to take on the best of the best at the Summer Olympics in London. Kerri Walsh said it took a little while to get back on track with Misty May-Treanor and they had two poor finishes earlier in the year. However, she said “and we realized we were maybe thinking too much about this being our last run together, holding on too tight to that. We got back to working on fundamentals and it’s been good.” Misty May-Treanor has announced it will be her last Olympics, while Kerri Walsh plans to play again in 2016.
So, while they are preparing for competition, London is preparing to host them. Approximately 5,000 tons of sand from Surrey, England is being brought into the beach volleyball arena in London. It will be located at the Horse Guards Parade which hosts the annual military parade.
Even though Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor may not be the favorites going into the games, they are striving for nothing less than gold. Right now they are third in the Olympic qualification ranking.
The temporary ‘beach’ will sit 15,000 and will be a popular spot from July 28th to August 9th. Misty-May Treanor and Kerri Walsh are hoping these 30,000 eyes, which are sure to include Walsh’s two sons, 3 year old Joey and 2 year old Sundance, will be on them as they win that last point in the Women’s final on August 8th.
