Halifax Personal Trainers Offer High Intensity Strength Training

Halifax Personal Trainers - High Intensity Strength TrainingStrength Training By Personal Trainers in Halifax

Halifax personal trainers at One to One Wellness on Dresden Row in Halifax, Nova Scotia are proponents of a form of high intensity strength training.  It’s not a new concept, but it is unique in the Halifax area…and a different approach than what most trainers across the continent take with their clients.

High intensity strength training sounds like something professional or Olympic athletes go through in order to compete at the highest levels in their sport…but this is a misconception of the term.  The personal trainers and physiotherapists at One to One Wellness in Halifax use this technique as the preferred form of exercise for seniors and rehabilitation clients.  According to One to One staff, it is the safest and most effective means of exercise available in the strength training toolbox.

High intensity means much like it sounds… high exertion and high intensity use of large muscle groups for maximum strength gain, working to muscle fatigue on any given exercise in minutes.  Complete workouts last only 20 to 30 minutes and are usually performed only once or twice per week to give ample muscle recovery time.

Nick Matheson, owner of One to One Wellness, rattles off half a dozen names and studies when asked why he takes this approach at his facility.  They show that high intensity, steady force exercise to a point of momentary muscle failure and performed once or twice per week is superior to other techniques for building strength quickly and safely.  More quickly and more safely than what you find in other approaches.

A quick scan of the high intensity strength training literature does seem to support this approach, and according to articles in the Journal of the American Medical Association and others, it can help bone density as well.  Those who are osteoporotic, and those at risk for osteoporosis are seeing increases not just in strength, but in actual bone density. (Effects of High-Intensity Strength Training on Multiple Risk Factors for Osteoporotic Fractures, JAMA)

Personal Trainers at One to One Halifax have embraced this form of exercise and it seems to appeal to their clients, who keep coming back. Perhaps more facilities will look at this approach, which is convenient for busy people looking to get more effective exercise in less time.  In the meantime, however, One to One appears to be the place to explore high intensity strength training by Halifax personal trainers.
