Google Goggles will allow users to take their screens wherever they go.
Our world may be advancing in technology at a rapid rate, but are we ready for the next endeavour? Google plans to release eyeglasses, known as Google Goggles, that will project entertainment, information and of course surely it will include advertising.
The lenses of Google Goggles will be pretty much like a see-through computer monitor. Those looking at someone wearing these glasses will see nothing other than a silly pair of glasses. However, the body language, ducking objects or laughing the individual is doing may look a little strange. It will give people watchers a whole new experience!
Although the goggles are not expected to be worn at all times, it is expected that many people will be using them consistently. This can easily be expected when thinking about further technical creations such as the Smartphone. Some people seem to have these glued to their hands.
The Google Goggles are being built by Google X in their secretive lab near Mountain View, Calif. They are rumoured to be ugly, but will include a wireless internet connection, an Android operating system, motion sensors, GPS and a camera.
Reports suggest users will be able to look at landmarks through these glasses and immediately see historical information as well as comments friends have left about the area. Facial recognition is also being looked at. This would be great when you see someone who you know you should know….but just can’t remember. Pull on your Google Goggles and you could be reminded of who they are. Also, upon meeting a new person Google may be able to tell you how many friends you and this person share on social networks.
So, the issue of privacy of course will have to be addressed, but companies may be thinking differently. The power of this invention for advertisers could be drastic. Businesses can place ads everywhere!
William Brinkman, graduate director of the computer science and software engineering department at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio said “In addition to privacy, it’s also going to change real-world advertising, where companies can virtually place ads over other people’s ads. I’m really interested in seeing how the government can successfully regulate augmented reality in this sense. They are not really going to know what people are seeing behind those glasses.”
So, if you are looking to get media exposure, perhaps Google Goggles are an exciting venture you want to look into. However, looking at the statistics over how many car accidents have happened due to modern technology, the question must be asked….will this be more of a problem than a help? I guess we’ll have to wait to find out.
